The City of Duncanville received its designation as a Texas Certified Retirement Community by the Texas Department of Agriculture on March 15, 2007.
Public Safety - Programs
CITIZEN SAFETY ACADEMIES The city of Duncanville Fire and Police Department are home to citizen academies promoting public safety in the community.
These programs are used to inform the community of public safety issues surrounding the police and fire departments. Topics of discussion include the Texas Penal Code, Criminal and Civil Liability, Patrol Techniques, Accident Investigations, Family Violence Investigations, Gang and Youth Activity, Narcotics Investigations and Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT), Emergency Medical Services, Fire Protection Systems, Dispatch, Extrication, and Search and Rescue. Within these programs there are special areas designed specifically with senior citizens in mind. Senior citizens and other retirement aged individuals are some of the most active residents supporting the Police and Fire Departments, and are highly involved in the citizen academies.
CITIZENS ON PATROL
The Duncanville Police Department's Citizens on Patrol is made up of 57 volunteers who not only give their time, but their vehicles as well. Since its inception in 1995, these volunteers have donated 17,257 hours. In addition, they have assisted at parades, bicycle and 5k races, searches for lost children and adults, and various other functions.
The main purpose of a Citizen Patrol is to provide a visible presence on the streets as a deterrent to criminal activity. Having concerned residents on the street actively watching sends a clear message to strangers in the neighborhood that crime will not be tolerated. Thieves, vandals and drug dealers don't wish to be observed so the presence of law-abiding residents alone can reduce crime.
A secondary purpose of the patrols is to report suspicious or illegal activities to the police. The
police rely heavily on citizens to tell them about crime incidents and suspects. These patrols can provide timely information to the police which can help apprehend criminals.
Beyond these reasons, patrols provide an opportunity for citizens to participate in activities that improve their community and can provide a grass-roots organization that can react to other threats to the livability of the neighborhood.
TRIAD
Triad means a commitment among the Duncanville Police and senior citizens. They agree to
work together to reduce the criminal victimization of the elderly and enhance the delivery of law enforcement services to older persons.
A major purpose of the Triad is to develop, expand, and implement effective crime prevention
and educational programs for senior citizens of the community. Activities center on both pre victimization (preventative) and post-victimization (victim-witness assistance).
Triads work to improve the quality of life for seniors. It provides an opportunity for the exchange of information between law enforcement and senior citizens. Triad focuses on reducing unwarranted fear of crime.
The senior advisory council, often called S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Lawmen Together) is the key
component for the success if a Triad. In each community the S.A.L.T. Council acts as an
advocacy / advisory group and provides a forum for the exchange of information between
seniors and law enforcement. Council members are selected and invited by the chief of police,
the sheriff, and someone representing older citizens - an energetic, knowledgeable senior or
someone from the Agency on Aging, AARP, RSVP, ministerial association, etc. Council members
can be a valuable source of input. They can assist in determining the concerns of the
community's older persons, assess the availability of existing programs for the elderly, and
recommend additional strategies. S.A.L.T. Council members may also take part in the crime
prevention and victims' assistance portions of the Triad program, and help identify potential
volunteers to carry out Triad activities.
Seniors and Law Enforcement Together
The SALT’s purpose is to establish an effective partnership among seniors and law enforcement services, work toward the reduction of crime and victimization of older persons, and provide assistance to elder victims.
The S.A.L.T. Council (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) plans activities and programs which will involve and benefit both law enforcement and seniors.
Dallas County SALT Council is supported by the Dallas Area Agency on Aging, AARP, Dallas
County District Attorney’s Office, and The Senior News Source.
